Keeping the Weight Off

Health

Happiness

Most of us don’t have a problem losing weight.   In fact, we’re very good at it…initially.   The problem is keeping the weight off.   Because most approaches we take aren’t sustainable for long-term success, we fight an endless battle of weight loss and regain.    Enter the National Weight Control Registry.   For the past 3 decades, this investigation has compiled 10,000 individuals, who have been able to successfully lose at least 30 pounds and keep it off for at least 1 year.  Through annual questionnaires, the researches have been able to identify some commons habits and practices of these success stories.   Here are a few of them:

  • Self Monitoring – weighing in at least once a week
  • Physical Activity – equivalent of about 1 hour of moderate exercise daily
  • Screen Time – less than 10 hours of television per week
  • Restraint – portion control, limiting “trigger” foods

So what does this mean for us?   Although helpful, these findings should not be taken as gospel; all of them may not work for everyone.  The overarching theme with weight loss and maintenance, is consistency and adherence to whichever strategies you decide to follow.   The National Weight Control Registry is an excellent resource of practical strategies to potentially implement.    Figure out what works for you and do it daily.
