Science > Your Beliefs
Science provides measurable, objective meaning to the world around us. Unfortunately, for many of us, it can be complex and confusing. Science is an ongoing process that often leads to more questions than answers; rarely are concrete statements made by reputable scientists. This leaves us frustrated, and susceptible to popular belief systems that we see on social media. These beliefs may include specific foods or supplements to eat (or avoid) or rules as to when, where, or how much to eat. They can be cleverly marketed to provide a sense of community, comfort by removing confusion, and promises of better health. When we put these belief systems above science; however, it can prevent scientific progress and may even be harmful. How can you navigate science versus belief?
- Keep an open mind – be curious and experiment to see what works best for you
- Take the “middle of the road” – be aware for terms like “always” or “never”
- Be skeptical
- When you hear certain buzzwords
- 1 size fits all approaches
- Claims that over-promise or may be tied to monetary gain
Renowned astrophysicist, Neil deGrasse Tyson, may have summed it up best when he said “The good thing about science is that it’s true whether or not you believe in it.” The science may just be slower than we’d like, so be patient and be cautious in the meantime.
