TRICK OR TREAT?

Health

Happiness

It’s been a week since Halloween and most of us are currently dealing with an overload of candy in our homes.  A general rule of thumb with any food, particularly “junk” food, is that “if it’s in your house, it will be eaten eventually”.   How do we avoid overeating on all the candy?

  • MOVE IT…Keep it out of sight and make it physically difficult to access.  If you want it, it’s still there, but you’ll have to do some work to get it.
  • ENJOY IT, REASONABLY…Assuming you have a daily calorie target, allot a small % of those calories to candy for the time being.  This is a guilt free way of lessening the allure of all the candy.
  • DONATE IT…Check your local community for candy donation drop-offs for deployed troops or in-need families.   You can also do a Google search and find plenty of organizations accepting donations.
  • TRASH IT…If the candy triggers you to overeat, regardless of any of the tips above, then you’re better of just throwing it in the trash rather than potentially sabotaging your progress.

At the end of the day, what’s so special about Halloween candy anyway?    Is it that difficult to find Snickers, Kit Kats, or Reese’s Cup at any point over the other 364 days of the year?  Most of us pass the candy aisle every week when we’re food shopping and don’t even think about going down it.  Perhaps, all we need is a change in our mindset to help us take the correct approach.   The key is figuring out the approach that’s going to allow you to stay consistent toward your goals.
